As an aside... Strictly speaking all acronyms are pronounced as words, it's what differentiates acronyms (eg PIN) from initialisms (eg ATM).

Unfortunately "acronym" seems to have taken over both usages, and the distinction is all but lost

Too many TLAs. They're taking over the world and reinventing definitions!

Someone once told DH that "navy" was an acronym, back when he first joined. I don't know whether they were taking the **** or just hideously misinformed.

He very seriously informed me that it stood for "nautical auxiliary volunteer yeoman".

I don't get the difference between PIN and ATM being acronym and initialisms.

    Personal identification number
    Automatic teller machine.

    How are they different???

"PIN" is pronounced as a word, just like needles and pins. "ATM" is spelled out, A, T, M.

PIN can be said as pin. ATM the letters are pronounced seperately.
