    Default Mirena problem....strings not there

Had a pap smear today and the GP could not find the strings to my mirena....wtf? Now I have to go for an ultrasound to locate the mirena in my uterus. I can't see how the strings could have moved up through my cervix into my uterus as my cervix has never dilated. GP says it may have moved or come out (surely I would know). GP did a preganancy test because if it has moved I could be pregnant. Test was negitive though.

Has anyone heard of this happening?

I have when researching it as a contraceptive, as you said they do an ultrasound. It's possible for it to move and I don't think they worry too much about it as long as it's still in an acceptable place.

If you google displaced mirena you will get a few hits.

yeah, as long as the mirena is in the right spot its not too much of an issue. You will need your gyno to remove it when its time though, cant get the GP to do it ... but you may have wanted that anyway if you havent had a vb as its painful.

    dont stress ...

    Default Mirena problem....strings not there

I've had my Mirena for a couple of years now and by the time I went for my 6 week (post insertion) check up my stri gs had 'disappeared' too! My obs did an ultrasound and the Mirena was perfectly in place except the strings had moved up into my uterus (I have also never had a dilated cervix). No big hassle. Just means that when they go to replace it at the usual 5 year mark they will do it under twilight anaesthetic instead of the normal removal. It's all fine
