    Question Photography to make money??

    Hey all.

Not sure if I have posted in the right section or not, I just have a few questions.

I started a FB page last year sharing my photography, and I did a few shoots for friends .

Being pregnant and needing some extra money, I thought I would start selling canvases and metallic prints of my landscape work.
I was thinking of doing it through FB and possibly markets.

A family (cough) member is raining on my parade, and is saying I need an ABN and to register my business name etc...
I had a look but don't really know what to search for. This is just a temp thing for the last few months of my pregnancy and I see it as a hobby not a business.

I don't want to get into any trouble of course, so thought I would see what you think.

If it does happen to take off and I want to expand and continue selling my work I will then get an ABN if I am making a steady amount per week. I just don't see affording an ABN and other yearly fees to earn a hundred dollars a month (if I am lucky!)

    Thanks

Not sure, but I think this would fit into hobby- $25 a week, I wouldn't bother. You wouldn't get taxed on that anyhow.

I think it sounds like a hobby. You could look up the criteria for what constitues a hobby on the ATO and see if that helps your decision.

if its under a certain amount per year that you make, it's still considered a hobby

You can even put your designs on red bubble and sell as a hobby income, though I think you still need to give them your tfn in case you sell more.
Alternatively do it cash in hand ;p

I had a look at the "is it a business or hobby?" page on the ATO website, but honestly I don't understand it! I might have to give them a ring.

It will be cash in hand. Just was going to put a few prints at my inlaws market stall when they go to markets.
