Default Ceiling and wall is cracked! Freaking out.

    Hey all.

I live in a townhouse, that has about 6 houses joined.

Tonight while cleaning after dinner, I noticed a big crack going down the tiles behind the stove.
I told DF about it, and he is says "oh yeah the ceiling has cracks too"

I had a look and there is a HUGE crack going along the whole kitchen ceiling.

I am calling my real estate first thing, but I am worried it's not safe? I am scared the top half of the house is going to cave in while I sleep

    Anyone know if it's safe?

It's plenty safe, just some movement in the house. The reason you've probably never noticed it before is because it probably happened so slowly.

Like Pp said its from movement in the foundations. How old is the town house?
It happens all the time don't worry about it it will not cave in, how wide are cracks?

Oh thank god, I feel a bit relieved now!

I have no idea how old this place is, far from modern. 20-40 years old maybe?

The cracks are not very wide - few mm in the roof, bit thicker in the tiles.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it it is probably because its been so dry lately that the foundations are moving. Def get it checked out but by the sound of it they are not structural cracks just cosmetic. Eg plaster movement slab movement this can be cause by drainage issues and also dryness of the ground

Do u live in inner city melbourne?
Nearly all classic townhouses there have many cracks.
We have cracks in every wall and roof, some a few meters long. It's not a danger. Our place is over 120 years old minimum. They build them with bricks then put plaster over it. It's the plaster that is cracking, not really the structure of the house being compromised.
Lots of suburbs are known to be like this. U just have to keep patching them up!
