Thanks everyone. Such lovely ladies on the hub for support.
The vet shaved and cleaned his tail. He has one nasty wound on the end of his tail which could have been caused by anything and the vet said its probably itchy and annoying him as it scabs so he bites it, which is making it worse. the vet removed the scab, cleaned the wound, gave him an anti inflammatory needle and put an e-collar on him (one of those cone collar things) which has to stay on until the wound heals. My poor cat is currently scraping the collar along the ground and everything he can find in an effort to get the collar off.
He is in perfect health in every other aspect though and has no sign of skin conditions or fleas or stress.
Between my cat scraping the collar on everything to try and get it off and my husband snoring I don't thinking i will be getting much sleep tonight.

Hopefully it all heals soon. Those collars suck but they do get used to them fairly quickly - if you can spend some time brushing him daily it will help as cats hate being ungroomed

Glad it's nothing serious! Those collars would drive my cats bananas!
