Finances permitting I'd love to take my kids to see some snow this winter but we're not skiers and I don't really want to pay the ski vilage premium. Any thoughts please?

What state are you in? Here in Victoria there is a place called Lake Mountain which is ideal for such visits to the snow. I haven't been there in years but I recall that there's a toboggan run and it's perfect for people who don't ski but want to visit the snow.

Thredbo in May it generally snows and is more affordable. I was there last May for Mother's Day. It snowed and was fairly quiet and just absolutely beautiful! I'd love to go back again in May in the upcoming years
Anywhere else and I have no idea as I've never been ^__^

I live in SA and it works out cheaper to goto NZ for snow season! Remember your winter gear & passes are the most expensive part really

I agree with Lake Mountain if you're in Vic (or are happy to travel there). You could just do a day trip and get accommodation in Marysville if you don't want to stay at the lake mountain resort.
