Default Help please!, bub won't suck

    Hi,

I have a beautiful 16 day old dd. She was born at 36+6 by c-section and after a couple of days initially of feeding trouble whilst we both learnt she has been feeding great. Until the last couple of days.

She got oral thrush and developed an aversion to my right breast where she wouldn't latch at all, we treated the thrush and got maybe 24 his of good feeds. Now she has started playing up on both breasts, after fussing she latches and gives a couple of half hearted sucks and then pulls off and screams. This can happen for over an hour and is now happening at every feed. It is breaking my heart and I am so close to giving up but desperately don't want to.

We have tried different holds and positions, tried feeding her at her early hungry signs, tried waiting for her to cry first, expressed some milk first and tried sort of pumping the breast once she latches to help flow until let down and nothing seems to help

    Ideas please

    Nipple shields?

They were my godsend. Really helped with the aversion.

And don't listen to anyone who tells you about them interfering with your supply!

Could she have thrush still (i think it needs to be treated for a week or two) or maybe silent reflux? Although if she's pulling off straight away I'm not sure. Sorry not much help.

I agree with the above. I think she could have thrush back. I would go straight to dr.

Does she have a dummy? My girls were 35 weekers and were given dummies to encourage sucking reflex.

Started giving her a dummy on Monday, thought it couldn't hurt to try.

Not much help but as above it could still be the thrush. Have you been treated yourself? I cannot remember what I used, but the nurses at my local drop in centre told me what to get from the chemist (I'm sure the pharmacist would know) as you might be passing it back and forth like I was.

Also, if she is pulling off and screaming she might be getting bad wind straight away? Or not getting milk at all? Are you having a let down?

I'm so sorry I'm not much help but I found it was a lot of trial and error and just trying to work out what it is.

Do you have a local community centre with nurses there? They helped me a lot. I highly reccomend you see someone. Or you could call the ABA. They were a lot of help too.

Hang in there. I know it's so hard, but try to take a breath and relax when she is screaming as it helps if you are calm.

I don't have any experience with this, we had thrush also but she never refused to feed (although it really hurt me)
Call the ABA asap, they are really experienced or can give you some great information, possibly an lc to call.
