Default Is it rude to ask about someones tattoo?

I noticed an interesting tattoo on a good friends new BF, as i don't know him at all i don't feel comfortable outright asking, so i was wondering if its rude to ask about it or not?

ETA: its got some names and dates on it so i am assuming a memorial

People generally wouldn't mind I'd imagine. Putting a tattoo on a part of your body thats visible to others is pretty much inviting the occasional comment or question I would suggest.

I wouldn't think anyone would mind... it's not like you're making a negative comment. Having tattoos myself I get comments here and there, asking where I had them done etc.
He would probably be chuffed that you noticed and admired enough to comment. I can't see anyone having a tat on display and then being offended at it being noticed.
When I'm not in the "mood" for my tattoos to be noticed/discussed, I cover up.

Default Is it rude to ask about someones tattoo?

As someone that has quite a few tattoos I believe they are to be seen and not hidden and most tattoos have meanings to people so I don't think it's rude to ask someone I enjoy telling people about mine

i have visible tattoos that people ask about all the time.
and i don't mind at all (that's why they are visible )

other ones are merely for me and nobody sees.

I wouldn't ask about a memorial only because I wouldn't want to bring up sad memories or make them share that personal info with me.

I'd ask about other tatts though.

See I thought the opposite! If I thought it was a great tattoo I'd still compliment the person. It's up to them whether they tell you the story behind it, and I would think most people would have a memorial tat to remember someone and publicly show their respect. Some might like it when people ask as they can share the story of a wonderful, significant person in their life
