    Default Age for mammogram.

so my cousin has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.she's 38 and has 3 kids:-(:-(breast cancer is pretty rampant in my family.my nan(on my mums side)had it.this year 2 of my aunts and 3 of my cousins have been diagnosed and are currently undergoing treatment.my mum has suggested that I ring my doctor and try to get a mammogram.I'm only 30 but assuming with my family history it will probably be done.do you think my doctor will send me??I'm petrified because I have 3 young girls and obviously its in my family:-(what does a mammogram entail??

You poor thing but def worth getting checked. Runs in my family too and I had ultrasound and mammogram in late 20s, which found a lump and had part of breast removed at 30. Am 35 now and have annual ultrasounds and mammograms. Ultrasounds tickle, mammograms just squash your boob and can be quite uncomfortable but only for a few seconds.
If there is a family history it should be bulk billed. I'm in sydney and went to RPA breast cancer clinic which is a great facility.

    Default Age for mammogram.

How scary! Have a talk to your GP about what they recommend but it also can't hurt to learn how to do proper self examination as well.

Breast cancer is really common in my family too. It seems to strike in the late 30's, early 40's. I know my mother started having mammograms at 30 because of the family history.
I've never looked into it myself. I'm still in my 20's though so i don't think they would be sending me off anytime soon.

I cannot stress this enough.... A friend of mine was diagnosed this year with stage 3 breast cancer at 27! Dont assume age will protect you, any concerns please get yourself checked especially with family history of breast cancer.

    Default Age for mammogram.

My mother had breast cancer at 35 and is currently in remission.

Lately I've been feeling like I want to get a mammogram. I asked the doctor, he scoffed when I said I am 25, and then said it's a waste of time getting a scan while I'm breastfeeding.

    Is this true?

    Default Age for mammogram.

I see a breast specialist due to a strong family history and they do mammograms and ultrasounds in younger women as the breast tissue is a lot denser when we are younger so mammograms aren't as clear.

I have been told they can't do the scans while I am breast feeding too as they can't get a clear view of the tissues.
