DS started becoming quite independant at around 12 months when he started walkin. He was still quite 'compliant' (as in I could carry him if need be, he would hold my hand when asked) and cuddly, though. Now at 21 months he is fiercely independant. He pretty much flat out refuses to hold hands or be carried, has to battle stairs/ climb things/ get on chairs on his own and wants to do everything for himself, but his physical capabilities are still lagging behind! He gets upset when I get him a drink and pass it to him because he wants to do it himself! He doesn't really give kisses or cuddles anymore, he prefers to shake his head and say 'no' to everything!! He does still enjoy sitting on my lap for stories though which is nice.
I think my pregnancy hormones might be playing a part but I'm feeling pretty sad about all this too. Partly because he's going through a real tantrum stage due to frustration which is tough for everyone, and partly because it's very obvious he needs me less and less! I just go with it though, and try to let him do as much as he possibly can and help as little as possible when he does need a hand. Like you, I try to look at the positives of an indepenant toddler with a new baby, although something tells me he might all of a sudden need mummy again when new baby comes!

When did your "baby" start exploring independence?
My dd1 became very independent around 18-20mths but had a severe regression at 22mths when dd2 was born. For 2-3 mths she wanted me more cos I was busy with newbie. But now at 26mths she back at being "me do!!!".
