I have decided that in these early stages, learning to Zumba has some highs, and some lows:
Find out about challenge - high
First try at Step by Step - low, when I realised that I would struggle with the rhythms etc
Second go at Step by Step - high, things start making sense and I can do steps much better than previously thought
First try at Activate - Low, just getting flustered when I can't keep up or muff up a step etc
Second go at Activate - high,I can follow along so much better when I am familiar with what is going on.....
Which brings us to today. I was pottering around the house and would find myself doing little Zumba steps. Making lunch, I had to get to the other end of the kitchen bench and I found myself doing a little Salsa travel which led me to think that I was starting to *get* it.
And then I pressed play on the Exhilarate disc.
From the outset I was struggling to really follow and felt completely stupid. I know that I need to do it a few more times, but I hate being bad at things. It wasn't all bad, I liked the belly dance bits, and I actually really liked the tango bits, especially with those deep bends. And I excelled at the cool down.
I think a big hurdle for me is just getting a feel for it all, and possibly being less regimented. I know I need to master the choreography but I think that because it it dance it is also important to have some fun with it too.
(Probably could help to not expect that I am going to be measuring up to Melissa's moves in Exhilarate. She is clearly a very accomplished dancer. I am not.)

Day 6 - Riding the Zumba wave
I did Zumba twice a week for most of a year in 2010/2011... And I still get flustered doing Exhilarate. It really is a big step up from Activate. The steps are more advanced and they are so much faster. But you are right, as long as you are having fun and moving the whole time it doesn't matter so much if the steps aren't always correct

Day 6 - Riding the Zumba wave
I feel a bit left out in doing the 10-day fat loss programme because I haven't done Activate at all! I feel your pain, SPG, when I popped on Exhilarate the first time after doing just Step by Step, I almost cried lol! I can report, though, that I was much better the second time around! We will learn the workouts and moves and one day I swear I will have Melissa's abs!

I must admit I thought I would end up on my bum doing the tango.
I have only done it one and half time but still I get all twisted up.

Don't worry Jen, you will get it. I keep thinking of the advice my friend gave me when I was doing ballroom dancing classes (she was one of the teachers) "It is always one foot after the other, just like walking. There is no time that you have to step off the same foot twice in a row".
