Bless playschool for trying, but the message my daughters learned today was that we are not a real family. In the program they talked about families living in a block of flats. The Lee family, the Costa family and a mum and daughter who were described by their names, not as a family. Nice that they had a single parent family, but Esme talked me through it and described them as a sort of family. *sigh* I think it particularly bothers me because we have no extended family here.

Re: Are we a family?
Yes you ARE a family. Not a "sort of" family. A real family! A family doesn't have to be two parents & the kids.
I was a single mum for a long time and myself and my two kids were a real family, just like anyone else.

Of course you're a family.
DD and I used to be a family on our own. Now we've got DP. We're still not the same as "normal" families though... she still has a sibling out there who she's never met, and a Dad who doesn't even think about her... and her only "father figure" is a man who isn't her father, technically, and who has family members who like to say "He's not her Dad!" at every given opportunity...
But we're still a family, no matter what anyone else says.

Are you serious? And here I was thinking play school was one of the more politically correct kids shows on TV! How disappointing. I would have been furious if I was watching at the time!
Of course you're a family, just like DS and I (and our cat and puppy) are. I would write a letter if I were you, I really would. How offensive!

Yeah, I too thought Playschool was pretty good in this area
DD struggles with the family label thing also, as she definitely counts her Dad as being in her family, but we don't all live together in the same house, which is often how she is told to identify her family. For example, the kids will be given a picture of a house and are told to draw their family in their house, so she draws me and her. But then gets upset cos her Dad is her family too.

Haha- if you asked DS, it'd probably consist of his Mum, his real Dad who is in jail, his Dad who is just a pretend Dad (ex bf), his Nan, his Aunty and his cousins who used to live with us but than had a fight with his Pop who is mean, nasty and lazy. Where's our family on playschool?
SPC- you're a raising a family of independent little ladays who don't wait for someone with a penis to come and make them happy! Playschool shmayschool!

Esme gets upset when I try and tell her that our friends are not our family, which is why they won't be coming for Christmas. She really does want to be part of a huge extended family with many branches, poor little thing. I think I need to find some Italians to marry in to.

I felt very much like a family when I was a single parent, just a small one. There was something really special about it actually.

I want a nice big family too. I often lament over the fact that I am not a part of the "Modern Family," clan (and I secretly want DP to become Phil...lol).
