Default Cuts to baby bonus to balance budget

The Baby Bonus will be cut back for a $500 million saving. Presently, second and third children receive the $5000 granted for a first child. But this will be cut to $3000.
"After the first child you have bought the cot, the pram, and the other items you can use again,'' Mr Swan told reporters.

Sorry if this has been posted today! I searched and couldn't find it.

I wonder if they will reduce the maternity payment as well.

I can see where they are coming from, but I guess we would all be able to afford it on pollies wages

It made a huge difference to us as a family, with our 3rd and 4th, we had sold all our old stuff years before.

Has this passed or is it just a suggestion at this stage...?

I see both POV but don't see what it has to do with paid maternity leave - why shoudl that be reduced if you have been working enough hours leading up the birth then you should be entitled to the min wage for 18wks.

Given Labor want to deliver a surplus next financial year I'd say it's coming into effect very soon.

Sorry didn't mean to imply they should cut that also, just that when it was brought in it was for working mums to make it fair for those who didn't qualify for baby bonus due to income.

I don't think either payment should stop.

I actually think this is a good move.
I believe it comes into effect in July 2013 (could be wrong though).

Oh the whingeing on fb has already started so i came in here to look for this inevitable thread. Why should the taxpayers pay for us to have kids? If that 2k makes such a difference then maybe you should reconsider having more kids.

I think it is important to remember that it is a 'bonus' not a right, $3000 is still very generous for a bonus imo.
