Default No nappy rash but a very red bum crack

My 5 week old boy has a soft rash-free bum except for his bum crack (what's the technical term for that?) which is red and it must be sore when he poops or if pee dribbles down there. So skin in contact with the nappy is fine. The crack is not. What's causing this and how do I fix it? Help!

DD had the same problem, no nappy rash but her bum crack was really red and the skin was cracking. I was using happy rash cream and had a hunch to use baby talcum powder. So I started using powder during the day and cream at night, cleared up in 3/4 days and haven't had the problem ever since, and no nappy rash ever!

I thought it might be the poo and perhaps then related to the food I eat.

His poo is "seedy" and runny and yellow/mustard colour. Regular breastfed baby poo. Kind of like this but a little more "bitty"... http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__q4k2NYv5v.../health+BF.jpg

I'll try the bicarb - thanks for the tip.

Plain old cornflour sprinkled on will work a treat on clearing it up.

My DD had a red bum, as well an awful awful rash under her chin and I used cornflour and it cleared it up virtually over night.

For what it's worth, I googled 'technical term for bum cracks and it came up with Intergluteal Cleft.

    Fancy pants indeed!

It may just be staying too wet. make sure you dry it properly at nappy changes and bath time and apply the cream/cornflour to keep it dry and help it heal.

Same problem can happen in underarms, knee creases, neck folds etc
