thanks ladies for all your support and help. i have quite a number of 'cuts' on my nipples now from her constant biting. they blo0dy hurt!!! she starts the feed off with biting. so when she first tries to latch on she bites instead of sucks. some times she doesnt do that and its a bite free feed. but when she does start off biting she continues for the whole feed and subsequent feeds shortly after that. will use the teething ring next time mim. all today i have been taking her off and saying no when she bites but that meant that today she hasnt had much food (she has a fever also so if off milk a little)
when being newly pregnant or ttc or a new mum the dont tell you about these things. its bloody hard and heart breaking. i really do love sophia but i just wish she would understaand. thanks again.

spent most part of the day in tears. ive had it!! every feed i break down and have a panic attack just thinking about the next and what dammage she will do. i went to the chemist an hour ago and bought some nipple shields to see if that would work.... nope, it just encouraged her to bite even more and harder. she LOVES chewing on plastic things so that was a bad idea. anyway i gave up trying to use the shield, put her on the breast and she was sucking fir a bit but when she pulled
off she bit down and pulled so now i have a HUGE deep gash in my nipple
(amnghts other smaller ones and swelling) that one bled heaps. dh has taken her
for a drive so i can have a break and cry by myself.

sorry for the rant ladies.

thanks sarelou re the name and encouragement. i didnt think i would get this far bfing as my supply dropped for a little bit a couple of months ago (and she was biting back then too) so im rather proud that ive done it this long. i dont want to continue anymore though. hate hate hate it!!!!

I have no advice but I cried before and during every feed for the first few weeks due to excruciating pain. You are amazing to persist!

I rang the aba the other day about a similar problem - my bub is 6 months and teething and has badly damaged one of my nipples with his biting - I have blood and puss and terrible, excruciating pain. The counsellor I talked to recommended that before each feed I gave bub something that he could bite, so he got the biting out of his system. To help with the nipple damage wash the nipples after each feed with a mix of water (1cup) and bicarb soda (1 tsp), or salty water. I did the bi-carb thing and it really helped me.
Also, how is bub going with solids? You could always try giving her very milky soup to make sure she is getting enough of your milk.
Good on you for persevering through so much pain and for bfing so long.

oh no, im so sorry what i meant was that it was bad for me to trie it knowing what she is like with plastic stuff. the idea was really good and tbh i never would have tried it without your suggestion. now that i have used them i know that i have given it my 100% and tried everything.

im glad you suggested it!! im sorry if i upset you, i should have clarrified what i meant.

thanks ladies for your encouragement. am expressi.g out of one breast and persisting with giving that to sophia (the one thats most cut up and sore) in a bottle. i wont give her anything else unless she is absolutly upset with it.

thanks again lovelies. xx

Just wanted to say OP that I know exactly what you're going through <img src="images/smilies/hugs.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Hugs" smilieid="35" class="inlineimg" DS started biting me at around 6 months and the pain was excruciating. I'm a big believer of following the WHO recommendations for bf (until 2 years of age) but the thought of weaning did occur to me during this time as I was also dreading each feed and almost having panic attacks about them. My nipples felt like they were ripped to shreds and were tender and bleeding.. It was horrible..
As other PP's have advised, I would take DS off my boob as soon as he bit, say a firm "no" and put him on the floor. Unfortunately it did take about six weeks but it worked. I was so determined to keep going with bf and just kept saying to myself that "this too shall pass". I know it's hard to take comfort in that while you are going through this incredibly painful and frustrating time but soon it will be a distant memory for you, as it is for me! DS is 1 yo now, with eight teeth and since that six weeks I mentioned I'm happy to say there's been absolutely no biting and bf is going so well! We're all here to support you OP so please vent away about this xo
