Default Can a GP insert IUD?

Hi, Im new to this IUD thing. We had our second child nine weeks ago. My GP suggested Mirena for contraception and referred me to a gynaecologist. I called them to make an appointment but finally they said I probably wouldn't be able to get it inserted because they only do it on weekdays and I'd have my two kids with me, so impossible because the initial appt. and procedure takes a while. I have nobody to look after my kids and hubby cannot take time off work. My GP is on holidays for the next month so I can't ask her this now. Can a GP insert a regular copper IUD fairly quickly? I'm just considering options. I'd rather not use hormonal contraceptives (regular copper IUD isn't, is it? - see I said I was new to this) but really want some reliable birth control.

Weird, my OB/Gyn did my mirena in a few minutes. Is there any way you can take someone with you to sit with your kids for those few minutes.

I think some gp's can do IUDs. Family planning do them too I believe.
