Default Flea Prevention - Vet or Pet Store?

    Hi all,

Spring has officially sprung here in Melbourne (for a couple of days, at least!), and our dog will need flea prevention. I've seen it for sale in the pet stores but I'm not sure if that's where I should get it? In the US, it's sold in pet stores but it's not as strong as the vets' type - I just want to make sure my Jacky boy is covered before it's too late!!

    Thanks

doesn't matter where you buy it from just make sure you get the good brands. Advantix and Frontline are the good ones (these are found easily in pet stores or vets). The cheap ones like Exelpet do not work as well (normally found in Coles or Big W).

We use Advocate. It's a bit expensive but it does everything, worming, heart-worm prevention, fleas, ticks, mites. You use it monthly, the only other thing the pup needs is his annual vaccinations.

I get it from City Farmers, not sure if there is an equivalent in Vic? It is usually available in pet stores and vet clinics, and I know the breeder we got our pup from gets it online, there are some pretty cheap deals.

Actually, I have used Exelpet for years for my cat, and it's always worked. HOWEVER where we are the fleas aren't particularly prevalent. My grandmother tried it on her cat down by the coast where they have sand fleas (much hardier apparently) and it did NOTHING.

I do agree that Advocate and Frontline are great, they work on pretty much all fleas from what I hear .

I use Frontline for my dogs.

I buy mine online from www.pricelesspets.com.au and find this is the cheapest.

Thank you all for your help! I'll get Frontline since it's a brand I know - and since we take Jack to the beach. I didn't know there were such things as sand fleas ... how lovely

Thanks for the links, too, I'll have a look now!

ETA: I actually think we'll go with Advocate - it's not that much more expensive than Frontline and does everything. Thanks so much - again!

Happy we helped - we could not be happier with Advocate, its easy and our mutt doesnt bat an eyelid when we apply it.

Just make sure Jack doesnt swim or get wet for 48 hrs after application or it wont have had time to soak in!
