Default What do you think about little boys playing with toy guns?

My 6 year old has really gained an interest in playing armies/warfare games. He went to the show the other day and wanted the army combat showbag which has an army vest, plastic grenades, hand cuffs, badge, and a couple of rifles. There was a time when I would have cringed at the thought of him running around pretending to kill LOL! But I let him have the bag, as I figured that boys have been playing these games forever and I doubt it will cause him to grow up to be a serial killer!

I am really interested in what people think. Is it ok in your opinion for boys to play like this?

I think its fine for both girls and boys however ever since hearing of a family member being held at gun point one day then a week or so later was out at the shops and had a panic attack because some little boy was pretending to shoot her lol I have been a lot stricter while out and my boys start shooting people. I try make sure they dont shoot people these days but other than that I have no problem lol

I don't care what others do but we don't have any guns in the house and never will.
I just can't get my head around playing "killing people"...
    Meh, I'm pretty sensitive though.

I think it's fine, and my dd often plays guns.

Yea, I just think that kids have been playing these games since the beginning of time. And before we bought him the gun, he would be making guns out of lego and using sticks/pegs. We never encouraged this, so it must be a natural form of development as awful as it sounds!! lol

Doesn't worry me. Ds is right into playing with guns, being batman, or playing a character of starwars or hunting bears.

It's all imaginative play. He is however not allowed to point guns or swords at anyone including the dog or the toy is instantly removed.

It's children playing I don't see it as something that could lead to being malicious or anything serious.

We don't do it in our house, it doesn't sit well with me.... Making a game out of injury and death?! I don't care what others do though and my kids have certainly been involved in games like this from time to time ....

I must admit I'm not a big fan. Actually I'm not a big fan of violence at all I make DP turn off his shoot em up games when the kids are up. DS plays with them at nannies house as the kids there have them but it's shooting toys only! I hate it when they are pointing them at each other or faces freaks me out! I know he's not going to turn into a serial killer because of it I just don't like violence
