    Default Food addiction and emotional eating

    Hi All,

    I'm going to post this in two threads as I'm not sure really where this fits in. I need to ask for advice and see if anyone can help me. I have finally come to the realisation that I have a food addiction. I've tried many weight loss systems and I always lost a few kilos and put many more back on after only a few weeks. It's to the point where if I don't eat when I want to eat or eat what I want to eat I feel like my body tenses and I get angry. I start to get angry at everyone around me and usually binge eat on a daily basis. Once I finish binge eating I usually cry about how fat I am and that I don't know how to stop what I'm doing. I also eat when I'm bored. I eat when I'm sad to 'make myself feel better', same goes for stressed. I eat when I'm happy as a 'reward' for my happiness, so you can see the unhealthy pattern here. It's got a point now where I constantly feel depressed and I really feel like I need help to sort my own mind out and determine why I keep doing this to myself. My question is, does anyone know what help there is out there for food addiction? Would a counsellor help me or are there particular avenues I should go down? Should I discuss it with a GP? I'm at my lowest of low points today and really just looking for anyone who can help

    *hugs* I'm so sorry you're going through this.

    I have suffered from anorexia and bulimia and I saw a psych and went to group therarpy. Group is really confronting, but it's good because you're meeting other people who are going through similar things. My group had a mixture of all eating disorders, anorexia, bulimia, emotional eating, EDNOS.. everything. Group focusses on why you have these behaviours, what you can do to replace the old behaviours with new ones, and also teaches you how to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

    Most of these forms of treatment you do need a referal for. I'd start with your GP and see what they suggest. Also do some research of local specialists on your own, some psychs do specialise in EDs.

    Hi, I replied in your other thread as well. I also suffered anorexia and bulimia for maaannny years and counseling can help as well as the 12 step group 'over eaters anonymous'. Hugs, food addiction is all consuming

    I have no real advice other than it might be wise to see a counsellor who specialises in this kind of problem. Some people have also found comfort in hypnotherapy.

    I understand how you feel though. This was (is?) me. The only way it's stopped for me is because I had weight loss surgery and can no longer physically consume large amounts, so I just CANNOT binge. I can still make crappy food choices, but my surgery has also helped out with that because some foods taste like crap, or make me feel a bit ill (like KFC).

    If you don't mind me asking, did you have the gastric band and I'd so would you recommend it?

    OP I can really relate to your problem. I am definitely an emotional eater. When I was younger I suffered anorexia and bulimia, then as I got older rather than starving myself when depressed, anxious, upset etc. I would eat. I am currently reading a book called 'A Course in Weight loss', it is a spiritual journey on healing the underlying issues of my weight gain.. Attempting to confront the reasons I hide behind these layers, and learning to come to terms with myself etc. For me this has been the best thing so far, I am doing it at my own pace, and it is helping me. I think you need to find what works for you OP. Have a go at counseling, group therapy, whatever you think might work for you
