Default Importing photos from Canon 40D on Mac

Hi, hoping someone can help me.

I took a lot of gorgeous photos today on this camera and connected it to my Macbook Pro and imported them. However, some photos wouldn't import. It would just show a a black rectangle instead of the picture!

It was about 10% of the photos I took. Any ideas on what this is and how to get the photo off the camera? I've disconnected, reconnected etc. and it's just these photos and they're so beautiful I can't bear the thought of not having them!

    Thanks in advance!!

I should add that I can see the photo on the camera, on the Import screen, just not in the album they are imported to.

I didn't even realise I had an SD reader! I sorted it already though! Thanks

The genius bar guy told me you should import them to your hard drive first and then into iphoto. Sometimes it doesn't read the card properly and even though the thumbnail shows in iphoto if you click the picture to enlarge it may say it can't be found. If you do it from the hard drive it shouldn't happen. Just a thought.
