If there were in the house then I would attack but if they were in yard then I would just call the police

I'd go grab DD1 out of her room and take her back to my bed (DD2 already sleeps there), then i'd hide under the quilt with them while i call the police. No way in hell would i go out there and attack - i am alone with 2 small children, way too dangerous.

I'd definitely hide, close my eyes and wait for someone to find me

A dude in my yard? I'd not attack... I'm short and have never been in a fight in my life. lol. What kind of chance do I have if he gets violent?

I'd not just hide under the doona though... I'd peak out the windows and keep watch, make sure my daughter was safe, and if DP wasn't here for some reason, I'd be calling the police (as well as my neighbours because I'd be letting them know to keep an eye out... perhaps asking if one of the men wants to come and white knight me... lol).

I've woken to a man trying to break in the front door, called hubby who hot footed it over, by this stage the man had broken in the laundry door and was coming down the hallway, lucky I had the kids with me in bed, I saw his shadow on the floor and I yelled out for him to go away. Which he did! Hubby arrived about 2 min later, no sign of the guy around. Cops arrived about 5 min later hubby had called them after I called him.

    I miscarried that evening

So yeah I'm a hide under the doona person.

Hrm, I like to pick my battles. If I felt that the dog was at risk by said prowler then yes I probably would go out and confront them. But not before I'd called the police. And only if I could confirm that they weren't armed.

I tend to get angry when I feel threatened rather than trying to hide. I've actually considered getting an aluminum baseball bat for exactly that kind of situation. I was told a long time ago by a self defence instructor that a woman holding a bat in a stance that indicates you know how to swing hard and low usually frightens attackers off pretty quickly . I played baseball for years and I'm pretty sure I could do a fair bit of damage if required.

But honestly? If your chances of being safe are higher by staying inside behind locked doors then that's the smarter move. Chasing them off is satisfying but it won't always work and trying to be a hero often costs more lives than it saves.
