I have an account, like a savings account offshoot of my normal account that I can only access online to transfer money. I transfer all my bill money in that account and the night before it's due to be debited/ paid I transfer it. After I transfer bills, whatever is left over is for food, treats etc.

I pay things off weekly. So electricity, phone and net, I Bpay $20 a week off each. When the bill comes, I'm usually in credit.
Bigger expenses like insurance, I make sure I pay annually so I'm not having to deal with another monthly expense. A lot of providers are cheaper if you pay yearly as well.
If you can be bothered sign up with survey sites like rewards central and myopinions, wdyt, pureprofile, etc.. you earn points or a dollar amount which you can redeem for giftcards.
I've just recently reedeemed almost $200 in coles and woolies gift cards to use for groceries.. perfect to free up some money around xmas time.

Mortgage is paid fortnightly and is the first to be paid. I transfer money to a separate account for direct debits. I then pay whatever is due for that pay period. Then I do a big shop for the fortnight and whatever is left is left.
