My mum's fallback costume for my brother when we were kids was to dress him as a pirate:

    - bandana/scarf around his head
    - get an old pair of pants and rip them off at the knees, all jaggedy
OR roll up a pair of jeans to knee-length
    - stripey tshirt (or a plain-coloured tshirt)
    - belt around the waist
    - make a sword or dagger out of stiff cardboard and cover it in Alfoil then tuck it into the belt
    - make an eye patch out of black cardboard and elastic or string
    - draw on a goatee and some scars with a black or brown eyeliner pencil

How's that for cheap and fast? You could say he was from RL Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' (that's the only pirate story I could think of right now).

OR If you've got a black bedsheet, wrap it around your son's shoulders to make a cape; make a pointy wizard's hat out of black cardboard; find a stick for a wand and voila! he's from Harry Potter!

I should've said before that the trick is to think of a really easy costume THEN think of which book you can say it came from (ie a farmer's costume would be pretty easy...then think about famous literary farmers). They don't even have to be main characters (ie When I was in my kindy Christmas nativity play I was dressed as 'one of the shepherds' at the birth of Jesus - pretty generic!).

Sorry guys... The thing is he is really fussy and has decided no to all of those. I had already tried Wally and Shrek too but he just gets mad. He has ODD and Aspergers so mad is not something I want him to be. Lol. He wants to be Picasso the frog but I have no idea how to make that work well. Other than that he won't agree to anything. Mind you, it was his decision to be Shrek until I said yes than it was no. Help? Lol
