Restaurants have salt in the shaker with the least holes and so forth. Always found this really weird as surely you don't want a load of pepper to come out.
We don't have shakers, have a pepper grinder & then a bowl with sea salt that you just "grind" with your fingers like the fancy restaurants.

Wow. I always thought that salt goes in the one with more holes. I never knew there was any other way.

I agree with salt being in the one with fewer holes.

My shakers have salt and pepper on them! The salt is the one with the most holes and pepper the least!!
Pepper comes out of a shaker a tad easier than salt so I think that's why it gets the least holes!!

The pepper you put in those shakers is already ground... and is much finer than salt.
SO... it makes sense that the pepper goes in the one with the least holes. More will come out because it's much finer and slips through easily.
Salt goes in the one with the most holes, as it's bigger in texture and thus not as much will come out in one hit.

I've only ever known salt to go in the one with the least holes (often only 1 hole) and pepper in the other.
