Please explain why you (or some people) have dating scans?
I understand if you really don't know dates, but I see posts all the time saying "I'm going for a dating scan, I'll be 8+4!" I mean, if you know your dates, why do it?

I knew my dates with this pregnancy but wanted a dating scan just to be sure everything was going ok and in the right spot.

People are strange! I'm due for my 20 week scan in 2 weeks and I was telling mum the other day that I was in that I really really really want to know that everything is ok in there.. she refreshed my memory that when she had her children you just had to hope for the whole 9 months that everything was fine as scans didnt exist. I feel we are getting really addicted to knowing everything these days.

Both times I've had NFI when my LMP was.

I knew my dates too but my GP sent me for one anyway just to clarify I suppose. I didn't complain as it's my first bub and just wanted to see, even if it did look like a tiny blob!

It's to confirm dates I think.
Some people might think they are sure but then it turns out to be a week later or whatever.
Also apparently dating scans are more accurate then the 20 week scans in terms of due date prediction.
Also doctors don't trust women's "I'm sure its this date"
Plus a huge emphasis is put on due dates like its the be all and end all.
It also shows if there is a heart beat and if it really is a pregnancy.
I had them because I have no regular monthly cycle so I saw the point in that case.
But they are kinda exciting hearing the heartbeat for the first time.

With all of my pregnancies, my LMP and EDD have been way off. Around 10-14 days. It's very annoying and confusing so I like to know around when I'll be giving birth.
I also have a bicornuate uterus and it's good to know that the baby is in the right spot and not on the dividing bit.
ALSO I'm a very very anxious person and I like to know that there is a heartbeat. There is no way I could wait until 12 weeks!

If you have fertility treatment then you have about a million scans in the first trimester, to make sure everything is okay and to monitor that the baby is developing as it should.
With IVF you know exactly when things happened, but the baby's development may not be at the rate that it should be for those dates.

I was sent for a few 'dating scans' because I had a missed miscarriage the pregnancy prior and dr wanted to check if bubba was viable.
I would say that if you do know dates but still gettign a scan 99% of ppl go for peace of mind that everythign is ok for whatever reason.
