I went for a job interview on Friday. I got a call just before saying I had been successful. They just need to do a reference check and wait for the background check to come back.
Does anyone know what's involved in a background check? What do they check for?

Background check for a job

I think they just call your referees and previous employers and find out a little about you. I wouldn't stress too much about it, pretty standard practice.

What sort of job was it for? My bro interviewed with Macquarie, and their background check was a proper police check...

Might just be an extended reference check to find out a bit more about you like happymum2 said.
It probably isn't a police check - you would need to sign a consent form allowing them access. I work for a bank & all bank employees are required to have their criminal records checked as a condition of employment.
