You mentioned that you don't have a family gp or a trusted dr to go to? Thought I'd share that if you go to the beyond blue web site they have a list on there, I think under getting help who specialise or indicate an interest in mental health. This might help you find a dr that will be much more approachable and knowledgable about options and how to help.
In my experience it can be very upsetting to seek help from a dr that just doesn't get it.
Also it may be an option to get a referral to see a psychiatrist. They are the true specialists in anti depressants and if you are interested in non medication options there are psychs that specialise in therapy, not just all about prescribing drugs. I know because I've had a regular psychiatrist for years on and off when I've needed it. Has been invaluable as I've worked through depression, anxiety and binge eating disorder, and come out the other end

Oops just realised the first bit of my post didn't make sense! I meant to say there is a list of GP's who specialise in or indicate an interest in mental health on the beyond blue web site.
Good luck and take care. It's the brave courageous choice to seek out help xxoo

I've been on Endep for 6 years until I recently was forced to stop due to a heart problem I have. I never gained any weight from Endep.

I was advised by my physcologist to go on ADs but I was trying to loose weight and terrified of the side effects.
I went to a naturopth instead - turns out I had a hormone imbalance which contributed to my state of mind (and the weight issue)
They have various AD alternatives that you can use and they'll also look for any underlying issues which may be contributing as they are concerned with your health on a holistic level - not just treating symptoms.

Just a word of warning, make sure you find a naturopath through a trusted source. I went to a naturopath in 2006 for mood problems and my weight, he put me on a very strict no carb diet that was so restrictive and sent me into worst eating disorder period of my life and really messed with my state of mind, depression and anxiety, and he just get saying id feel better when i lost weight which messed with my self worth even more. I actually ended up in hospital.
I am a big believer in natural medicine but only if they are experienced enough to see the bigger picture.
