Default How many early ultrasounds will Medicare cover?

I had a dating scan 2 1/2 weeks ago and the ultrasound guy thought he could see a heartbeat but it was very faint (was only 4 weeks 3 days) so wrote that he couldn't see a heartbeat on the report. He also wrote on the report that I should have another u/s a week later. My dr has given me a referral which states that it's to check for a heart beat, so wondering if anyone has any experience with something similar in terms of bulk billing / Medicare? The first one was bulk billed. I'm in NSW, if that makes a difference.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm in Sydney and never had any ultrasound bulk billed. I am not a private patient, either

I don't know if there is a limit. I had about 4 or 5 with my second pregnancy which ended in miscarriage at 11 weeks. I think this time I had about 3 or 4 early on, plus my 20 week scan. I would think that if they think it's medically necessary to check development etc, it should be covered?

I forgot to say I'm in Adelaide.

I had 3 (dating, NT and morph)
But surely if they can't get the information they need from the scan and need you to come back that shouldn't cost?

I had a fair few scans.. 14 alone for the NT than heaps more. The only time i paid was when i needed a scan done within days and had no choice but go private.. WIG (western imagry group- western sydney area) does bulk billing thats where i had 14 done and didnt pay a cent..

If you have a health care card then you can get ultrasounds bulk billed at most clinics otherwise your doctor can write on the referal for it to be bulk billed. For a first scan I thought most doctors refered the patient at 6_7 weeks as not much can be seen before then.

I had about 5 early preg ultrasounds (not NT or morph scans) and tried to claim them from Medicare. They told me that Medicare would only reimburse for 3 of this particular item number (ie: the item number for the scan) per pregnancy. I was appalled, as all these scans were done for medically sound reasons- I had gone through IVF and I have had previous miscarriages/ ectopic pregnancies.
