Question IVF after tubal ligation - PHI and a few other questions?

    Hi

DH and I have decided that we would like to try and have another baby (or two). I had a Tubal Ligation about 2.5 years ago with our last child. Ever since we both have longed for another little baby in our arms. We have so much love to give another baby.

    So here are my questions:

    1. How much does IVF cost?

    2. We have only just recently joined HCF with the top level of cover - It costs us a small fortune but figured we couldn't go through the public system again because of the terrible time we have had having babies - awful midwives, doctors etc...So after the 12 month waiting period does it cover the IVF etc...even though I had the tubal prior to joining HCF?

    3. What is involved with IVF - What is the procedure?

    4. I have a mental block, we only just decided last night that we definitely want to do this (after many many discussions and tears), So anything else you can tell me about this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou In Advance

    Hi Ready,

I had a tubal liagation in 2009 after baby 3, and since got remarried in 2011 and decided to go thru ivf as we wanted another baby.

The costs of ivf depends on clinics and where you are located. Im on the gold coast and we used a cheaper clinic up near brisbane that offers more affordable ivf treatment. I didnt have phi but i can tell you the cost at that clinic was $2500 and i got back $1400 from medicare. Other clinics do charge a lot more, the first one we went to quoted us $12000. Which i believe we wouldve gotten about $4000 back from medicare. So i think its about really doing your homework on where you live and whats available to you.
The process for us was quite simple, we gad an appointment at the end of feb, did our blood tests and hubby did semen analysis, thst takes 2 weeks for results. That came back all good, then i was put on the pill for about 10 days to regulate my cycle. And then i was given the injections to take, every morning for about 15 days and about 5 days into it i started a night injection too, day one was gonal f and night was orgalutron, i think. The needles are really tiny and dont really hurt. During that period you go in and they do internal ultrasounds to check ur follicles r growing, then around 15 ish days, they work it out, you give urself a trigger shot which will make u obulate in 36 hrs. You will go to the clinic at the time and date specified, ovulation time, they knock u out or sedate u, they use a needle to go thru the wall of the cervix into the ovary and drain the follicles, and get any eggs out. Thats ur hard part done. Ur hubby will be off doing his business in a jar and thats his hard work done lol. Then they just fertilise the eggs and after 3 or 5 days you go back and they transfer usually 1 embryo back inside you, very quick 5 min procedure no pain at all, just like a papsmear. Then your on the dreaded 2 week wait, where u just wait fir the blood test, at 2 weeks after egg transfer and find out if your pregnant.

Thats a really quick rough rundown, but basically what i went through. I hope this gives you some insight into the process. I know it isnt this easy for many ppl, some go thru a lot of cycles to get there, i was lucky, we only did it the once and im now 15 wks pregnant with twins.

Im not sure if this has helped but ur situation sounds similar to mine, if theres anything else i can help with just let me no.
    Cheers
    Tamm

    Hi Tamm,

Thankyou so much for that and a big congratulations on your twins. Would it be possible to PM me the details of the clinic you went through. We have to travel along way so it doesn't really matter where we go we were thinking brisbane anyway. Being that price we could start fairly soon. I was always under the impression that it was around $10,000.00 a go which by the sounds of it some clinics are. Thankyou so much and you have helped alot.

    Cheers,
    RTR
