I went to NZ mid-pregnancy as well. We booked it just when I was suspecting I might be pregnant.
I had no trouble finding travel insurance, and my doctor had no issue with me going.

I am a kiwi I went back to Christchurch at xmas and was around 34 weeks. As pp's have stated there are no issues between Aus and NZ and you should receive good healthcare.
I just had to get a note from my doc to say I could travel and as I was going to Christchurch I was advised to carry my medical/pregnancy history with me in case of quakes.
