I done the same as for 2 financial years when I was getting back into work force - had a small amount of tax withheld and didn't think it would be worth it!! Well I have just had a letter from the ATO stating they must be done by a certain date otherwise I will be fined $5000 :0
They work out the penalty based on how much tax is being withheld etc!!

I have a question (hoping someone might be able to help me as I've been on hold to Centrelink for the last hour!!)
DH and I separated at the start of March. I then went onto the Single Parenting Payment. (still gettin FTB A + B and rent assistance)
DH has earned quiet a significant amount more then I estimated. Will I now have a debt to Centrelink? I've only been on PPS since April. I'm assuming I will have a debt?

Also another question how long do centrestink normally take to balance payments and also child disability assistance and carer suppliment do they come with regular carer payment ?

Cromo - you may still end up with a debt but it should only be to the beginning og march. Your ex may even get to share your debt. Well worth talking to centrelink. Wondering why your PPS didn't start til April if you separated in early march though??
Jagamoe - you will probably get your carer supplement and child disability assistance money first as these payments are not income or assets test. I care for my mum and my supplement is usually in the bank by the third week in July. As for family tax I usually get mine early august as I don't earn a lot (less than 40k) so my tax return isn't required. This is my experience anyway.
As for my experience with the tax office - they like to make life hard. If you owe them tax returns for the years since you've had your children they can make centrelink stop paying your family tax until they are completed. Also you can e fined if you haven't done your returns and you owe them money. These fines can be waived for valid reasons and if they see you making an effort to do the right thing. If on the other hand they owe you a refund they will also pay you interest on your money. I find it hard to see how they can fine you if they have to give you a refund!!! Scared tactics I think. Again this is just my ongoing experience!!
