Default Melbourne ladies! Need advice on nice suburbs please.

    Hi all,

My husband has been offered a job in Maribyrnong in Melbourne. We have no idea where to even begin looking if he decides to take it and we move there from Sydney.

We don't have kids (yet). We would like a suburb that is safe and has easy access to public transport to get into the city. Ideally, he should be able to commute to Maribyrnong by car in 15-20 mins.

We will rent to begin with while we find our feet.

Any helpful advice or comments are appreciated.

Also our rental budget would be around $400/week, if that helps.

Is Maribyrnong a nice suburb to live in or should we stay clear and dh just works there?

Maribyrnong is ok, some of it is quite nice (by the river) but the suburbs farourbrusselsprout suggested are all lovely. Flemington/Kensington/Yarraville/Seddon probably the cheapest, Moonee Ponds, Essendon and Williamstown a bit more pricey. Do keep in mind that a lot of these places have a huge shortage of child care places, so that's something to keep in mind.
I live inner west and I love it. Relatively cheap and close to town. Lots of public transport and lots to do, with kids and without them!

Maribyrnong is a really lovely place to live, especially by the river. It's very family oriented also, there is a st called middle road which has loads of rental properties, if that's what you are interested in.

There are also lots of others around but the rental price starts going up a lot from $400.

Two trams service the area, one to the city and another from moo nee ponds to footscray. You can also get the train from ascot vale to the city.

Highpoint shopping centre is currently under extensive improvements, with a David jones plus many specialty stores to open by the end of this year apparently.

As some others have mentioned, other areas close by are

    Avondale heights
    Ascot vale
    Yarraville
    Sedan
    Moonee ponds
    Essendon
    Kielor
    Niddrie

The last two might suit better for cheaper rental

I love Yarraville, but my friend who lives there put her bubs name down for child care when he was born. He's now nearly 2 and #52 on the list.

    any more opinions?

Childcare is no concern as the contract is only for a year so it's only a temporary move

    Thoughts on Brunswick?

Brunswick is nice, but the commute to Maribyrnong would be terrible.

I lived in Kensington for years and loves it. Lots of parks, 2 stops on the train away from the city. A 10-15 min drive to Maribyrnong.

Moonee Ponds is also fantastic, as is Seddon.

I'm not the biggest fan of Essendon or Niddrie.

    Yarraville is lovely.

    Aberfeldie
    Moonee Ponds
    Ascot Vale
    Essendon West

Brunswick is great but yeah, traffic at peak would be an issue.

If you want to look in Brunswick I would only look in West Brunswick- the part just over the creek from Moonee Ponds. As PP have said, it wouldn't be a pleasant drive to Maribyrong from Brunswick.
