My bub is only a week old and for the majority of the week he's been constipated... each day getting worse and screaming the high pitched "i have a pain" scream!! so upsetting!!!
we tried everything we could think of and read about - bicycle legs, warm baths, sugar water, tummy massage... we went to the chemist and got coloxyl drops... nothing worked, we ended up taking him to hospital and they examined him and gave us the name of another 'stool loosener' lactalose.... after giving him that once last night, he had one good poo this morning, slept for the good part of the night and all day today and now he's screaming again... pulling his legs up and has the same problem and it hasn't even been 24 hours.
he's a formula fed baby on S26 gold - newborn... can anyone suggest any other ideas? should i try change formula now? if so, which one would be good? is there anything else i can do? dh and i are pulling our hair out, we just can't settle him :-(

I would be changing formula, just go to the regular s26.

Yep, stop the formula. Gold formulas contain more iron and can make bubs constipated.

Maybe before changing formula, it migth be worth calling the Maternal and Child Health Line (have a look at http://www.education.vic.gov.au/earl...rt/mchline.htm). They should be able to provide you with professional advice or refer you to someone who can.

I would definitely change formula straight away. My DS had the same problems & after reading other mums experiences on here it's that damn S26 Gold formula. Soooo many kids get constipated from it. We use Nan HA gold & he settled in about 12 hours.

nan ha has had the milk proteins broken down so it is one of the closest formulas resembling breast milk in terms of digestion. i would go see your gp or ring the hospital too.
poor thing, i hope he feels better soon.

My ds is 10 wks and is on s26 gold and has been constipated. I always get him to drink water before every feed, and it helps. In fact he has gone the opposite way with his poos now (but that's another story). If you do change formulas stick with the new one as apparently changing too often messes with their gut. Good luck.

I found my son was alot better with water inbetween feeds. We live in a hot climate and need more than just the 3 to 4 hour feeds. I would never go 3 hours without a drink so I gave him a small amount of water when he was awake and playing a while after a feed and his discomfort disappeared.

Yep I agree with the S26 Gold, it clogged up my DS something horrible, Nan HA was much better.

Hi Webby, your poor little guy! We had the same prob when our bub was on reflux formula. Even with a good proportion of breastmilk with it, he still blocked up.
We were lucky enough to have a specialist paed (bub was a premmie) who advised extra water with the formula (10-20pc extra) and prune juice. It's gentle on little tummies, tried and tested over the years as a laxative, natural, and you can up the dosage as need be without side-effects. Add 5-10ml to a newborns bottle, going up to 20mls each bottle as required. Bubs love it as it's sweet, and you can dose a few mls with a syringe as a top-up between bottles if needed. It has sometimes an immediate effect, but usually within a couple of hours.
It fixed our bub up, suddenly he wasn't 'antsy' and pained, he slept better and relaxed again.
Also, a really good formula is Bellamy's Organic (from Coles). It actually tastes fantastic!
Good luck, I hope you try the prune juice, as it worked a treat for our bub.
