Default Abortion rates are not reduced when it is illegal

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8305217.stm

To say that it is just that a woman dies because of an abortion is hypocritical. A bit like pro-life fundamentals murdering doctors who perform them.

Even for those who are pro-life, keeping abortion legal keeps lives safer...

A proper medical abortion will usually end in a dead foetus. One life gone.

A backyard job could end in maternal death as well. Two lives gone.

It makes no sense to be pro-life, yet not care about the life of the mother too. That just means you're pro-unborn, anti-woman... not pro-LIFE.

Of course not, it just increases the chance of the mother's death, because if you want it gone, you'll find a way, no matter how dangerous.

reminds me of the doco christy turlington produced (no woman, no cry).
ridiculous that 70,000 women die from abortions.

personally i don't think prohibition of anything actually reduces rates or helps....it only causes more problems.

    Amen.

As much as i dont like the idea of abortion, it is still preferable that women have the choice of a relatively safe procedure (and a quick death for the foetus), rather than make it illegal and have backyard abortions, soooo many more issues there! So much more emotional and physical risk for everyone involved

I do think there needs to be more adequate counseling etc before an abortion though, esp in regards to young girls being coerced into abortions by their parents. This has happened to 2 women very close to me (before i met them) and it is something they DID NOT want to do but felt they had no choice as parents threatened to kick them out, said they had ruined their lives etc... Now these 2 women live with the regret and guilt for the rest of their lives. If only they had someone to support them and help them access assistance at the time so they could make a fully informed decision

I do see the inconsistancy... and even when I considered myself strongly pro life (my stance has softened a great deal over the years to a pro choice view) I knew that legal abortions simply made it safer and women who want one for whatever reason will sometimes risk a backyard one if it was illegal.

and I'm with halloweendee, I really don't support prohibition on anything (except maybe heroin) as it just drives the practice underground. I see legal abortion as harm minimisation. Either way the life inside her will end, either at a clinic or by her own hands. The only question is will she survive with the latter option?

I'll admit I was shocked at those comments that it was ok for the mother to die from a non medical or professional abortion.

Yes, I watched it years and years ago and still remember parts of it as if it were yesterday. So so sad, it's horrific what some women had to endure
