Default What does your current prep child know?

Hi! I am currently homeschooling my 5 year old daughter because the school she will be going to is an hour away...she will be going there for grade one next year. Just wanting to see what other prep children are up to with their reading/writing/maths, etc?

    Thanks!

my 5 year old knows the alphabet, how to count to 30, how to spell her first and last name, can read a bit, can add 2 digit numbers pretty well (like 9 +10) (10+11) she knows about creation and evolution, cause and effect she has down well, all the shapes, all colors, what colors you mix to get other colors there is more but cant think of it off the top of my head

Thanks, DD is similar to that, puts my mind at ease at bit....Only knows numbers to 25 (to write) though but only because we haven't done any further......and she still struggles with a couple of letters

You can have a look at the QLD prep outcomes on the Education Qld website...

    http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/17929.html

Then you can monitor your child's progress.

Awesome, thanks G....I did look at that earlier in the year but haven't since....printing them out now I wouldn't be too worried if we were going to continue homeschooling but seeing as she will be going to school I want her to stay somewhat on track

nice to see you on the Hub again

My preppie can read basic text (I am a...... etc I see the ......etc) and write very simple sentences with some known words (it, the, sun, mum, I etc) and some she uses invented spelling for eg friend = frnd
This week in prep they are doing "g" but she knows the alphabet and most of the sounds.

She knows basic age appropriate addition (2+2, 5+1 etc) and she can tell/draw a number story eg there were five flowers somebody picked one and now there are four left etc she knows shapes, colours, can sort and classify.

    I hope that helps

Wow my preppie can't do much of that stuff above!!

She can write all of the letters of the alphabet, and her first and last names. She can read about 10-15 sight words (and, is, at etc). She can do very basic addition 2+1 etc.

I have been told she is exactly where she is supposed to be for prep in qld!! Her school still does a very play-based curriculum though...

Ours is play based too but my preppie has had an older brother and sister to emulate and I'm a teacher so I often seize those teachable moments if they come up and she's wanting to know

There is a preppie in my daughter's class who can write stories - as in a whole page of writing () and one or two who are just writing their names now, and some like my daughter who are in between - all within the range of normal I think
