DP and I have enough money to buy our new car - finally!!!
We've found the perfect car listed online so I'm going with my dad to inspect it today (DP is working). What do I have to ask??
It's a '06 Mazda 3, has done 83000kms and they're asking $9,999 if that helps anyone form any questions!!
Before we buy it, we're going to get it checked out by my mechanic guy to let me know if their are any inherent flaws but I want to look as though I know my sh!t so I'm not played...just in case.

buying a car...what to ask?

Also ring the company that does financial checks on used cars to make sure the previous owner doesnt still have outstanding debts on the car. I think it might be REVS? Ask to see the log book to make sure the car has been regularly serviced.
But getting a reliable mechanic to look it over is the best thing as you've mentioned.

Ask about the fuel efficiency, why they are selling the car (could have a potential problem), how many owners the car has had, are they authorized to sell it (finance and revs check sort of thing) and whether or not it's been in an accident at all and if anything was damaged.
Think that covers it!

always test drive it! for an hour, even if the owner has to come with you.

A revs check will tell you if the car is financed etc.
Get a mechanic to check it out.
Offer them 8k. And go from there.

If I want to get it checked at my mechanic how does that work? Do they let me take it, do they come with? Or should I just get it checked at a local place?
I trust my mechanic with my life which is why I'd rather him, but not sure how that works!?

Just give him a call & ask how he wants to do it

THIS IS SCARY! I wish I knew something - anything! - about cars!

Definitely have it checked over by your mechanic.
-why are they selling?
-how many owners?
-been in any accidents?
-any problems with it mechanically while they have owned it?
-has it been serviced regularly? (ask to see the service book/log)
-is it encumbered under any finance?
When you test drive...
-check the lights & indicators are working
-try out air con and heater
-check radio/cd player
Also take a look underneath the car (where they have it sitting in drive way/garage) and see if you can notice any visible leaks (ie oil). If it has any bad leaks there may be a puddle on the ground.
