    Default 3 year olds cough?

My ds1 has a terrible cough, it's at it's worst when he is lying down (he is having a nap at the moment) it is to the point now that he's making a really strange loud (i can hear it though a closed bedroom door and hallway door) whistling kind of noise when he breathes in before he coughs?

He does have asthma, but it doesn't sound like asthma to me. He's been fighting a cold for about two weeks now but it hasn't really developed into a full blown cold.

Any idea/experience? I don't wanna go running off to the doctor to be told it's viral (which has happened soo many times) but will take him if need be... (obviously )

If he's making noise when he breathes in it could be croup. If he's bad during the day, then he could be a lot worse at night. I'd be getting to the doctor today.
