I've heard this said SOOOO many times (mostly from the older generation) when they talk about a guys bad habits... as if a life time of a bad habit can magically be changed by his wife/partner..
Like with DH, his family has mostly eaten fried, fatty food..so he's over weight. I'm a very healthy eater. so mil CONSTANTLY goes on and on ''you have to change his habit, get him to eat healthy'' ...umm your the one who got him into the bad habit in the first place, for past 30yrs of his life, how to you expect me to change it ??!! (oh and i have been trying for 6yrs!! )
Another...my bf's DH is a smoker, started at a young age, parents didnt bother stopping, but they constant nag my bf to help him stop ... and yes she has tried but bad habits are hard to change

I believe it is possible, but only if they want to change as well or realise how much they stand to lose if they don't change.
My DH has finally given up smoking marijuana (17 year habit) and cigarettes after facing the possibility of losing his wife and son if he did not.

Felicia my niece is in the same situation her bf is a marijuana smoker and he can get very angry if he doesn't have a smoke he won't get a job and now she is due to give birth soon. For 3 years he has promised this and that saying he will change but he won't. I am scared for her and worry about this new life they have created ( happy family she calls it) my sister can't stand him because he won't hive up the smoke and get a job. My niece is scared to leave I think and he has anger issues. We tried to get her to leave but she won't because he has made her feel worthless and that no one will have her. It's heart breaking to see that. My niece says its hard for him to give up but my sister said well I gave up cigarettes if I can do it he can. He should do it for the baby at least. He doesn't want to change and my niece is going to pay the price for it.

I don't think anybody should expect someone to change just because you marry them.
