I have found the 'perfect' tattoo, the perfect location and have fairly good idea where I want to get it done but OH is so completely against it, so I guess I won't be getting one.
I really like this one, lower back and on each side of the heart, I'd love the boys names.

I know what I want and where I want it. I just need the money and the confidence. Too chicken to go through with it.
I have a friend who has quiet a few tattoos, and I am probably going to ask her to help me to find the best artist.

Pain-wise, I'm someone who thinks it hurts. I liken it to being carved into with a knife that's on fire! (Mine are upper middle back, upper inner arm and top of foot.)
That being said, they do a line, then stop for a sec and re-ink so it's not totally constant pain, kinda stop/go.
A lot of places have websites or Facebook pages with artists portfolios on there (which will save you some leg work). You can also ask friends to recommend artists , then look at the friends tatts and see what you think.
On another note, ToughLove, we wanna see this cheat piece you speak of!!

My wrists killed me, i feel the pain pretty extremely. Ive got ones on middle back, upper back and wrists. Wrists hurt the most by far. Worth it tho, uber cute ^_^

I find the pain completely bearable. I have had me ol' tramp stamp covered up recently and it's still a work in progress. It represents my ttc/infertility journey.

I have ankle, back, neck and wrists.
the wrist and ankles didn't hurt, the back did when it went close to my kidney area (makes sense, organs and all!)
i have a high pain threshold though. to me it feels like someone drawing on you with one of those clicky pencils (only without the lead, just the metal bit) if that makes any sense.
definitely agree with pp about being sure, finding a great artist (not just good....) they should have a consultation with you and then have you come back later (not tattoo you then and there).
coloring and shading tends be the more painful part, and remember color fades. you have to look after tattoos (suncream, moisturiser) too.
but they are addictive....
