Ok - well I didn't/don't know what you meant - sorry for asking sheesh and I now don't know what you mean by 'coining a phrase'?

Anyhow depending on the tone/use i don't like my 5 yo calling people bum heads if she is doing it to insult them even though it wouldn't be considered a mature swear word. Luckily she isn't yet exposed to shi.t.head, ar.se.hole, f-words but I expect she will start hearing them when she goes to school next year.

Honey I know what coining a phrase means it just doesn't work within the conversation written in this thread.

We 'kind of' do the 'big people words' thing here too... but more from the angle that - unless they know what it means and can use it in context/a sentence - then they have no need to be using it.
They have heard DP and I swear at times - I'm not AGAINST swearing! - I definitely think it has it uses - but there is a time and place.

DS1 -6 and DD - also 5 'get this' and will dob on DS2 when he says it..think that is part of the trouble..he is a comedian - who thrives on attention and reaction.

He isn't directing the words AT anyone in particular, he is just saying them, repeatedly in one of those annoying sing-song ways that kids do

It's definitely a personality thing with him.

    Cheers for the replies.

I think that remaining calm and ignoring him will work best. DS is also a bit of a clown/comedian and loves the reaction. They do need reminding that the words are inappropriate, but leave it at that and ignore and soon enough the novelty will wear off. I also find that walking out of the room DS is in when he's swearing works too, he HATES getting the cold shoulder, it works MUCH better than getting angry and raising my voice at him.
