Default CVS stories postive and negative

    Hi All,

Im new to this and in the early days of our pregnancy.

We were unlucky with our last pregnancy after receiving a 1 in 200 risk of down syndrome on the nuchal test and then an amnio confirmed the worst. Our decision was to not proceed and I feel that I do not need to explain my reasons for this.

Now this time round second pregnancy we have decided to have the CVS procedure so that we have the results early. Obviously I am very nervous and anxious because the risk of miscarriage is higher with the CVS than the amnio.

I am hoping some of you can share your stories whether they be good or bad.

    Thanks and fingers crossed

    Hi,
I can understand your worry and i'm sorry you had to go through that during your last pregnancy. The chances of it occurring again to my knowledge are fairly slim (if at all).

I had a CVS at 13w as my blood test results with NT returned very bad. I had a 1:3 for downs, 1:55 for tri 18 and 1:108 for tri 13.

The CVS was performed in Sydney by a specialist. His name dr Greg Kesby. He does these all the time so chances of miscarriage were greatly reduced. It's best to have this procedure done by a fetal medicine doctor/specialist as this is one of the specialities rather than have your OB do it.

Thank God for my results, after being given a 99.9% chance of abnormality, we were told after 24 hours that 90% of the results were back and they were all perfect! We had to wait 2 weeks for the final results, which praise Jesus, also came back perfect!

IMO, the CVS hurt and as soon as I walked out if the building, I burst into tears. It was aweful. I know 90% of woman say its just uncomfortable and this could very well be true. I have a lot of scar tissue in my stomach, so they did have to push quite hard. The most painful part for me though was when the needle went through my cervix. My poor hubby almost lost his hand thanks to me! Lol.

Would I do this again if I needed to? Yes. But I would wait till 13w again too because the earlier u have it the higher the chance of miscarriage. I had right toward the cut off time.

Hope this helps. Sending big hugs to you. Congrats on this pregnancy and I wish you all the best xx

I had a CVS about 2 weeks ago at the RBH in Brisbane. My results were 1:33. It was scary but the only thing that hurt (on the day) was the local getting inserted into my tummy. I couldn't look at the needles going ino my tummy I just looked at dh.

FOR ME I couldn't feel any pain just the pushing and the noise the 2 needles made whilst rubbing together to get the placenta out.

Once the local wore off it hurt! But they say you can have panadol after. I waited the 48 hours and phoned for the FISH results which came back clear. Still waitin on full results. But they said no news is good news so I'll wait till my appt with my gp.

    Hi,

I also had a CVS after getting results of 1:89 for Downs Syndrome.
As PP said the local was the only sore bit, then i felt a bit of movement but no pain, it was all over within about 5 minutes.

I too cried the whole way through but it was the fear of the unknown that was upsetting me more, and the fact im a total sook about anything medical, so for me to say it wasnt bad at all is a huge thing.

Plus you get to see bub before in the ultrasound, I also requested to see him afterwards and hear his heart beat as i wanted to make sure the procedure hadnt effected him.

I didnt have any pain afterwards just some very mild period like cramps. No bleeding or leakage of fluid. Take your time to rest afterwards, I had 2 days in bed, DP's orders.

Im now 23 weeks and the CVS and NT results are forgotten.

I hope all goes well for you and please keep us updated xx

I chose to have a cvs with my 2 most recent pregnancies- purely for peace of mind. Both performed at Sydney Ultrasound for women at 11 weeks and 5 days- both took about 2 minutes for the actual procedure and did not hurt. I was worried afterwards as there was a slight tight feeling in my belly, but this feeling is normal. I paid extra to get the results quickly. All in all, an ok experience- well worth going through it to get the peace of mind as neural tube results are just a prediction whereas the cvs is diagnostic.

PS: I think the slightly higher miscarriage rate for cvs has more to do with the 'background miscarriage rate' rather than the procedure- due to the higher rate generally for a miscarriage before 12 weeks. All the best

Thank-you all for your replies. I have my first appointment with my ob next Tuesday so will find out more then and hopefully get a date organised for the test.

Do any of you know how much the test costs when going private in Melbourne?

Good luck next week! No sure of costs in Melbourne but for me in Sydney I think it cost $700 (or close to that amount) on the day but I also had an appointment on top of CVS. We were told we would also receive a bill in the mail for about $400 but haven't received it yet.
Update: just received the bill and it is for $480😝

Keep us posted and wishing you all the best x

the actual CVS test was not a problem, just a bit of stinging. I had no pain or cramping after, I did rest the following day though. That's the good part

    The bad part -
Although the test went fine, our results were not, I would have been glad if it was downs I think (not that I am judging your previous decision). the FISH results have come back with Triploidy which is fatal and now we have to decied whether to terminate or continue which the knowledge the outcome is grim. It's very hard as the ultrasound looks fine and all the measurements are good as well as heartbeat! Waiting for the final results and a miracle in between!

Godsgirl- I'm so sorry to hear about your devistating news. Such an aweful place to be. I was petrified this would happen to us, however, it didn't. I know for us, I we found out that our bub had a fatal abnormality, we would have terminated ourselves as I could not bare knowing it was going to eventually happen and would constantly be worrying throughout the pregnancy. I do pray God has a miracle for you n hubby. I pray gods peace upon u all, and pray for divine intervention where the full results come back and a miracle has occurred which leaves doctors scratching their heads. Stay strong either way and know God is good and only gives us good. If in the unfortunate event, the worst happens, there is a reason why this happens and sometimes we just don't know why at the time but eventually, one day, it becomes clear. All in His time, not ours. I hope I have not offended you in any way, sending big hugs to you xx

Godsgirl im awfully sorry you have been given the results you have. Thank-you for not judging our decision. I pray and hope that you get a miracle when your full test results come. Although our results have shown different abnormalities I do understand to some degree what it feels like to be in your shoes. There is an amazing organisation that I joined for woman, couples and families suffering and dealing with these types of situations. They are called Teddy Love Club. If you have time I would suggest looking them up as they have some great resources on offer should you need them and some wonderful support groups. Fingers, toes and everything crossed and thank-you for taking the time to share your story.
