Default Is it normal for babies on Neocate to..........

Is it normal for babies on Neocate to be very difficult feeders and hardly ever finish a bottle despite being hungry and to then be constantly hungry only ever having small amounts but around the clock? Sometimes it takes an hour or 2 to get DS2 to feed at all even though he is biting at his fingers hungrily. It's a constant, frustrating battle with him starting to feed and then pulling off, or refusing to feed at all, but sucking hungrily on his fingers and crying. He can have 7 bottles a day and still not meet the volume of formula he is meant to have for his weight, often only having 75ml-125ml a bottle even though he is 5 months.

Also...is it normal for babies on Neocate to take longer to sleep through the night? I'm thinking that it is because DS2 just takes the edge off his hunger most of the time, rather than filling up because the stuff tastes so vile. Sometimes he feeds 4 times a night.

Has anyone sweetened Neocate. If so, what with and how much?

I wish I could put him on something else, but we have tried pretty much the lot and they have all made him sick except for the Neocate. He has Cow's Milk Protein allergy and reflux. He is on Nexium for the reflux.

Someone tell me it gets better!

DD never had any of those issues.
As a baby she took ages to feed because she hated the taste but as soon as she went on neocate she started sleeping 6-6.

Hi, I could've typed this almost 12mths ago. I was desperate!!!

I had such problems with the Neocate, but you can sweeten it with a teaspoon of pure icing sugar and then obviously slowly wean it back.

My boy NEVER had anywhere near what was recommended on Neocate & the stress of feeding refusal was enough to make me go crazy.

    How old is bubba?

Our paed put our boy on Elecare Junior Vanilla at 10mths. It's meant to be for ages 12mths & older but after starting that we've never looked back. He drinks his bottles now, no more fighting & coercing. No more measuring....

Good luck, pm me if your ever wanting an understanding ear.

Thanks for the response. It gives me hope! We had DS2 on the infant EleCare and it made him horribly ill, so I'm a bit reluctant to try anything else. The Paed said that DS2 will be on Neocate until he no longer needs bottles as his allergy is quite severe. Can I ask whether your DS also had reflux? Also, did introducing solids help?

DS2 is 5 months old, by the way.

DD always had at least half the age recommended does of neocate. Don't sweeten it with icing sugar that extremely bad for teeth and can give them a sugar high. Although I wouldn't recommend it if you have to you can use pure organic vanilla essence. You can buy flavored neocate for 1+

DD had very bad reflux and was also on losec.

Our pead reccomended we start solids at 5 moths due to DDs allergies and also put her on liquid multi vitamins which I just mixed in with her breakfast when I started her on solids.

Sorry Your question was directed at me.

DS drank very small amounts too as a baby. And he still doesn't sleep through (at 2). But he had terrible reflux so swallowing could be painful and drinking always led to vomiting so he drank small amounts, but frequently.

We tried sweetening but it made his reflux worse.

After 12months he started drinking more and started to love his Neocate and guzzle it down by the bucketful. We're now having trouble weaning him off it.
