I am guessing the debt will die with them, but have a claim upon their estate, so if they wish to pass anything on, they will need to do so prior to death and not in a will.

I would have probably burst into tears, then fainted.
It's very lucky they have such low repayments and i suppose they are just grateful to have a healthy DD. What choice did they have? It was either receive the care or have the baby die - when you look at it like that the debt would be worthwhile. Obviously still very devastating to have such a debt hanging over your head though.

I do feel sorry for them as it's a debt that will always hang over their heads.

But.....ALL pregnant women should thoroughly check an insurance policy if traveling, it's just common sense. Yes I know most of us don't read long disclosure statements generally, but I know I certainly read every word of ours when we went to the USA when 15wks pregnant. Let thus be a lesson for all of us

What did your policy say about having a live born baby at 26 weeks?

I totally agree with what you have written here.

Also if you can't understand what you are reading make calls until you understand it completely. The amount of people who do not read the product they have purchased is huge!

Not covered at all. We searched for another policy with no luck, but then still decided to go because if god forbid had I have gone in to labour whilst away, then DS wouldn't have survived anyway (we were back at 18 weeks).

I can't understand how care could amount to over 8k a day? I mean really, that's just ridiculous. Even if you look at $200 an 8 hour shift for a NICU nurse, at 3 rotations that's only $600 a day. Maybe $500 a day for use of the equipment. $500 a day for the bed space. That's less than 2k, and even then that I'm aware there isn't 1 nurse allocated to 1 child per shift is there??

I think they allowed the low repayment bc they knew the parents could probably contest the amount anyway.

Sounds like reading the fine print wouldn't have made a difference if like Pesca77 found, you can't get insurance to cover care of a liveborn prem. So, the only 'lesson' to be leant is not to travel while pregnant or don't speak out without being criticised.

Maybe they can sell the story to media, publish a book... to make some money. Would they still have to pay if they declared bankruptcy?

I wonder if having this debt will affect their ability to get a loan for a house, car etc etc?
