Default *Obvious SPIN OFF of a SPIN OFF that has been SPUN!* > Evolution VS Creation!

A thread to discuss it, debate it, even dismantle both sides of the coin and then build them back up again.

The age old question > Creation Vs Evolution

    Fence sitting welcome!

Respect for the individual putting forward an argument would be appreciated while you address ther points.

The discussion is not for there to be a 'winner', it is not to present white with black.

And it not an attack on 'faith'. Many scientists can, and do have faith in 'something'.

Sharing knowledge and understanding, whilst it may get heated is healthy.

I also understand some people may not want to come in and actually leave post for what ever - hitting the 'thanks' button is also seen (in my eyes) as participating, and I'm all for that!

    so,

...okay I typed 'What do you think?' here
    ...but backspaced.

    - Maybe 'DISCUSS' is more appropiate.

[**personal disclaimer, yes I may seem obsessed - but I have allowed myself a lazy weekend **]

Evolution is a solid winner for me due to ample evidence. However, I have had the extra benefit of studying archaeology and being about to see parts of the fossil record first hand.

I cannot fathom believing in creationism. I just cannot get my mind around it... my brain goes, "Wtf?" when I even try to consider it as a possibility. My brain just finds it so unlikely... so impossible... so wrong. I don't know why, I just cannot even consider it as a possiblity... it just seems absurd to me.

I know this could potentially come across as offensive, and for that I apologise, but I can't really explain it any other way. My mind just cannot comprehend why that would even be a possibility.

I haven't spent much time looking into evolution though, because in all honesty, I've never felt a strong desire to know HOW the world came about. I just don't care. I don't need answers either way... but the theory of evolution at least makes sense within my head... it at least seems possible and even rather likely...

    ..but why?

    ..why?

    ..how?

    ..why?

= the questions I find should never be shut down with the response, 'because it just IS'

I encourage my children to ask these questions (yep even if it's as basic as to why they should clean their room ..because there will always be a reason 'why'...and helps to understand why we do things)

This applies to the world around us too.

for example ...If my kids ask why butterflies drink from flowers - I like to explain to them how they evolved over years along side the plants ...as insects their 'jaws' have fused together over time to make a 'straw' - this straw gets deep inside the flower and helps them suck up the nectar.
We appreciate the beauty in that.
I don't think it would be fair to their questioning mind to just say, 'someone just made them like that'.
I DO say 'I'm not sure.." .plenty of times - and then if we have the time to investgate it - we investigate it by looking at books, watching documentaries etc.

Sassy - my DP is just like you.

Here's my take on it. God created the universe and put in place the possibility for things to live, grow, evolve. I believe the creation story took place over millions of years, not 7 days, and when He put humans on the planet, it was after humans evolved. Woman came from Man was a way of explaining that. Perhaps males evolved before females (or females evolved further after males ceased to evolve ).

I don't think we came from apes, but think it's possible that ape and man originated in the same spot but took different paths, so while apes were evolving, humans were evo
ving. So from the same starting point well before taking form of human or ape. There is no doubt in my mind that humand and apes are close cousins.

It makes sense to me that we originated in the water, and that dolphins are also a relative of humans. If you look at our design, it is similar to that of a dolphin.

In short, I believe creation took place, but over a lot longer timeframe than 7 days, but it might have been like 7 days to God.

I also believe we are not the only planet God allowed life to begin on.

SAB - can I just say thankyou for coming in here (all other threads aside!)

and your take on creation is accepting evolution...and your explaination of apes and man being cousins is pretty much how it is! in basic form.

    I appreciate you perspective.

Yes but I don't believe we evolved from them. I don't remember what they're called (and dd is in trouble so she's stormed off) but I believe the prehistoric dolphins became land creatures as well as continuing to evolve in the water to later become dolphins. I can't explain it well, but basically at some stage during the process some ended up on land, some in water. We remained in the water, the ones on land later bacame apes. Then when the other water ones split we ended up on land but because we came from the same place there were similarities, but I don't think we were apes first. It probably makes very little sense. We've had a rough time this afternoon. It would also help if I knew the names of the prehistoric ocean mammals

Evolution for me. Although one thing I don't understand, why are so many creationists (and not all, I KNOW that it isn't ALL) against the idea that god created the world to let it evolve?
We already know that words and context have changed since the bible was written. Who's to say that "created in seven days" didn't mean "created the beginning, and allowed it to evolve over several million years?"

I guess that's why I'm able to be religious AND believe completely in evolution. I take evolution as something that was seeded and begun, knowing full well that human beings would be an end result.
    That's just me though
