totally agree benji - the problem with smacking is that the force & impact is dependant on alot of factors such as the fact that the parent is often angry at the time they do it (so they may not realise they are hitting a bit or alot harder than they think they are) & the physical strength of the person that is inflicting the smack, which differs from person to person. For this reason it is very difficult to ascertain the level of pain inflicted. And of course there are those that are actually knowingly abusing their kids & calling it a smack.

Never. Never will. As a kid who was raised in a household where we got hit I can tell you the psychological damage is permanent - regardless of the severity of the *hit* *tap* whatever you want to call it. I would never lay a finger on a child.

whether it is a tap or a hit it is still using the same mentality if you ask me. Is it ok for your kid to tap another kid if they are annoyed by them? Probably not, I think it is still putting your hands on another person as a means of discipline regardless of the level of pain inflicted.

Tap, smack, wallop, belt. It's all on the same spectrum of violence. If you wouldn't put up with your partner 'tapping' you (and you shouldn't), your child shouldn't have to put up with you doing it to them.
