Gah. My boss calls me to say she's going to be late. At 6. She's meant to be home at 6. Then asks me if I can stay back. I'm a nanny - like I have a choice!
It's SILs bday dinner tonight and it's pouring and Sydney has totally shut down. I won't make it to dinner now. A little more notice would be nice. Far out.

The family I used to nanny for used to do that alllllll the time. It was so annoying because they know you can't say no.

Did she say why she would be late? Maybe the traffic is making it unavoidable to be late, hopefully you will be able to make it for some of the dinner...

Late because they left work late and traffic. Traffic I get, but if at 5:30 you haven't left work and you know you won't for a while then call me! If they'd called then, DP could have driven here and waited with me and we'd both have been a bit late. But DP had left by 6 and it'll take me at least 1.5 hrs to get to dinner by public transport

can you do a thing like daycare centres where you charge for every minute you have to stay back?

that is sucky time management on your boss's behalf.
at least a bit of notice should be given rather than calling at the time theyre usually home.
