I have a sunbeam one that was $350 when I got it ages ago.
You don't need to prefreeze anything.
You make up the "batter" and put it in.
It turns it and freezes it as it goes and once it's finished it's ready to go!!
It makes the best icecreams too!

Ohh ok. Now you guys have given me something else to think about. Sunbeam or cuisinart? I would prefer one that doesnt need pre freezing, but the cuisinart one is out of my budget for an ice cream maker. Guess I will look into the sunbeam ones too.

    Thanks for your replies

Both brands are good. Remember home made ice cream doesn't last like purchased ones. Once you freeze it the ice cream begins to go to ice therefore will not be the same. You are not putting any preservatives in the mix for it to last.

Just to clarify, the sunbeam one I have is the gelateria, around $320 retail.
There is also a sunbeam snowy for $59 but you have to prefreeze that one.
