I was single, working full time and extremely sick with HG for the whole pregnancy, so at about 10w I put a pram and carseat n layby, then slowly picked up other things like old chest of draws, change mat, nappy stacker (was given heaps of cloth nappies), bassinette, bunny rugs, nappy bag and clothes in dribs and drabs from about 5 months on. I didn't get toys or things straight up, but I did buy her a book before the birth. Everything was second hand except the nappy stacker, change mat liner and cot blanket which were from the Warehouse. The bassinette was from a friend who bought it not even 6 months earlier then put bub straight into the sidecar cot.

They need a carseat, a sleeping place, clothes and nappies. Anything else is a bonus and much of it can wait.

I'm 18 weeks with our first, so I can't give any advice on what will actually be useful :P However...

After doing a lot of research, we've had a list of what we want since about 12 weeks. We're buying everything second hand, so we just tick it off the list as it comes up. So far we have:

Heaps of clothes (given to us)
Blankets & sheets (given to us)
Hooded towel, small towels etc. (given to us)
    Nursing pillow ($5)
    Pram & capsule system ($280)
Ergo carrier & newborn insert ($60.50)
    Baby bath ($1)
    A few lamaze toys/books (total $6)
2 types of swaddling alternatives (one given to us, one $3)

What we still want to get:
    Modern cloth nappies
    Nappy washer
    Tallboy/drawers
Change mat to attach to drawers
    Cot & mattress
    Breast pump & bottles
    Infant bath insert
    Swing
    Washable breast pads
    Maternity/breastfeeding singlets
    Maternity/breastfeeding bras

Will pick those up as they come along cheap...still have plenty of time
