Default sticky eye - 3 week old, when should I take him to the doctor?

    Hi,

Since last night DS has had an oozing eye. I have been cleaning it with water and cotton wool and started putting breastmilk on his eye as well as massaging the tear duct.

It has not cleared yet, just wondering how long I should do the above before taking him to the doctor?

We used a saline solution and cotton buds and also breast milk I'd be hesitant to use cows milk personally but breast milk seems to work a treat remember to wipe from duct outward away from the eye and always use a clean cotton bud

thank you both for the info. Would I need to take him to the doctor to get saline drops? Not sure if I must leave it another day and see if the breastmilk helps clear it

You can just get saline from the chemist, you can buy little single vials, or big bottles and everything in between talk to the pharmacist if you're worried. My dd had gunky eyes for 7 months, and basically, you only really have to worry if the eye, or either lid is looking red and/or nasty. For just a goopy eye, there's no real issue, even if it's sticking together. As long as it doesn't look red it's *probably* ok. (as with ANYTHING if you are worried, see ur doctor, that instinct can be very subtle, but you can usually tell what you think is best).

Keep up the breast milk and duct massage

ETA: iPhone does not like the word gunky or goopy

Saline you can just get from the chemist I took my son in so many times over the 3-4 months e had a blocked duct and was just assured it would clear with time and not to stress just to keep bathing it I hope it clears up soon for you

At the 6 week check my doctor just told me to keep DD's eye clean with saline, squirt with breastmilk and use clean cotton wool for each wipe. It probably stuck around for 5 weeks all up but never bothered her

Saline & Breastmilk is what I would do. Just watch out if any area around eye is red, my DS had a yucky eye within 6 hrs it became red and swollen we went to the doctor and he was really concerned prescriped antibiotics & drops, thankfully it cleared up within a day of taking meds.
