I have a November DS and the mistake we made was getting a whole lot of stuff (not just from us) that was appropriate for a 12 month old because we went straight into Christmas. I recommend getting some things for him at 1 and some for 18 month+ that can be put away and brought out during the year.

Having said that the biggest hits for DS last year when he turned one was:
Little people Noah's ark (favourite over all the little people stuff he got)
    Blocks
    Ride on/push trike
    Fisher price phone
Fisher price lawn mower (he loves it, I hate it as it's very, very noisy)
Fisher price laugh and learn trolley (this is probably the toy he has consistently played with over the last 6 months and has grown really well with him developmentally).

My ds got a Cozy coupe for his 1st bday and has by far been the winner out of all his toys. I recommend that or anything they can push around. My ds has a cleaning trolley he loves to push around and stack things on an off it while he goes.

When buying for dd I decided to get things for a bit later down the track, as I knew what a few friends and family were getting her and they were all age appropriate things, so I decided to get things for 6 or so months down the track, espicially as like you we have birthday and Christmas close together so she is now starting to play with things I got her for her birthday but it's worked out well as I haven't had to buy too much to stimulate her!!

    A few things I got.
    - little people set, she puts them in the car and drives them around and makes them all kiss it's too cute!!
    - tea set, or any imaginative play really.
    -cozy coupe car
    -duplo
    -table and chairs

awe the coupe car looks cute but we have no where for him to use it we rent a small unit with almost no backyard. and no space for his own table and chairs (so cant wait until we buy our own house with SPACE)

Never really looked at little people...he already has a rocketship from the huggies give away...is it similar to that?

    So far I have

    Duplo
One of those doodle pad thingies
    Ride on bike
    Fisher price toolset

Is playdough safe for a one year old?
